How to wash jeans
Turn jeans inside out, zip and button them, wash in cold water on a normal cycle with similar colors, and hang them to dry. Wash them infrequently โ denim doesn't need a wash per wear, and each wash costs dye and fiber. The two extra rules: new dark denim washes alone until it stops bleeding indigo, and stretch denim never sees dryer heat.
The routine, and why each step
- Inside out: the visible face rubs against the drum and other clothes less, which is where fade lines come from.
- Zipped and buttoned: an open fly is an abrasive metal edge for the whole load.
- Cold water: indigo and most denim dyes release steeply with temperature โ cold is the main fade prevention.
- Normal cycle: denim needs real agitation to get clean; delicate underwashes it, heavy duty is for mud only.
- Hang to dry: no shrink, no heat-fade, and the water weight pulls wrinkles out. See the drying guide below for load logistics.
How often to wash jeans
Far less often than shirts โ every five to ten wears is a common range for jeans worn in ordinary life, with spot-cleaning and airing out in between. This isn't just denim-enthusiast lore: less washing means slower fading, longer fiber life, and better fit retention. Wash sooner for visible soil, odor, or sweat-through days. There's no health issue with infrequent washing of outerwear-layer denim.
New denim: the indigo quarantine
New dark jeans are the heaviest dye-bleeders in home laundry โ they can tint a whole load and even transfer onto light upholstery and shoes while worn. Wash them alone or with other dark denim, cold, until the rinse water runs clear (often three or more washes). Details and the colorfastness test: preventing color bleeding.
Stretch denim is stricter
Most modern jeans contain elastane, and elastane dies by heat: bagged knees and a loose waistband are usually dryer damage, not wear. For any jean with stretch, cold washes and air drying aren't style choices โ they're what keeps the fit. Rigid 100% cotton denim is more forgiving (a low tumble shrinks it slightly and temporarily), but air drying remains the safe default for both.
What jeans wash with
Established jeans: dark sturdy casuals โ the details are here. Never with delicates, never new denim with anything lighter than itself, and towels are a mediocre match. A jeans-only load is never wrong.
This is general guidance. If a garment's care label says something different, follow the care label.
