Cold vs warm vs hot water: which to use
Cold water (60โ80ยฐF / 16โ27ยฐC) is the right default for nearly all laundry: it protects colors, prevents shrinking, preserves elastic, and modern detergents are formulated to clean well in it. Warm (90โ110ยฐF / 32โ43ยฐC) earns its keep on underwear, towels, and genuinely soiled cotton. Hot (130ยฐF+ / 54ยฐC+) is a specialist: white cottons, bedding and towels after illness, diapers, and greasy kitchen textiles โ fabrics that can take it and soils that need it.
What temperature actually does
Heat helps detergent dissolve oils and lifts soil faster โ and it does exactly the same to things you want kept: dye (fading, bleeding), fiber tension (shrinking), and elastic (sagging). Choosing a temperature is choosing which side of that trade the load needs.
When cold is right (most of the time)
- All colored and dark clothing โ cold is the main tool against fading and dye bleeding.
- Anything with stretch: activewear, leggings, bras, swimwear โ elastane's lifespan is measured in heat exposure.
- Delicates, wool, and silk โ cold plus gentle agitation is most of what "delicate care" means.
- Lightly worn everyday clothes โ the soil level simply doesn't need more.
- Stained items before treatment โ heat can set protein stains (blood, milk, sweat) permanently; cold keeps them removable.
When warm is worth it
- Cotton underwear and socks โ a sensible hygiene default that cotton tolerates easily.
- Towels in regular rotation โ warm balances hygiene and color retention. See washing towels.
- Sheets and pillowcases โ skin oils release better in warmth.
- Visibly soiled sturdy cottons โ kids' play clothes, gardening clothes.
Warm is also the ceiling for most synthetics: polyester and nylon tolerate warm but distort and hold wrinkles beyond it.
When hot is justified
- White cotton: t-shirts, socks, sheets, towels โ hot keeps whites bright, and there's no dye to protect.
- Hygiene loads: bedding and towels after illness, cloth diapers, heavily greasy kitchen towels.
- Nothing else, really. Hot water shrinks cotton, fades every dye it meets, kills elastic, and can set stains โ its costs are real, so spend it only where it buys something.
The two rules for mixed loads
- The coolest requirement in the load sets the temperature โ one cold-only item makes a cold load.
- If that compromise leaves dirty items underwashed, split the load instead of heating it.
Care labels state a MAXIMUM temperature, not a requirement โ a warm-rated shirt is always safe in cold. That's the logic our checker uses when it picks a shared temperature.
This is general guidance. If a garment's care label says something different, follow the care label.
