How Recommendations Work
The checker uses transparent, rule-based logic — not guesswork, and not a black box.
Rule-based and deterministic
Each selectable item carries attributes such as typical fabric type, color behavior, recommended temperature range, and drying tolerance. The engine applies a fixed set of compatibility rules to those attributes — for example, that strong dyes shouldn't share warm water with light fabrics, or that heat-sensitive items shouldn't join a hot towel load. The same selection always produces the same result, and every rule change is covered by automated tests.
Conservative on purpose
When rules leave room for judgment, the checker chooses the safer option: cooler water, gentler cycles, lower dryer heat, or an extra separate load. A slightly less efficient wash is a better outcome than a ruined garment. If you know your specific items can handle more, you can always deviate — the explanations tell you what each rule is protecting against.
What the checker can't know
The checker works from typical properties of item categories. It cannot see your actual garment: its exact fiber blend, dye quality, age, or condition. That is why the care label sewn into the garment always overrides our general advice, and why we never guarantee that an item won't shrink, fade, bleed, stretch, snag, or become damaged.
The same rules everywhere
The engine that powers the checker also backs our editorial pages: every pair-comparison page shows the live engine verdict for its two items, and the settings tables on item pages are rendered from the same catalog data the checker uses — so a page can never quietly contradict the tool. Every compatibility rule is covered by automated tests, and identical inputs always produce identical results.
