Can you wash pajamas with regular clothes?
Yes
Yes — pajamas are simply soft everyday clothes and wash with any load of similar colors: cold or warm water, normal cycle, low tumble. The single exception worth knowing is children's flame-resistant sleepwear, whose label rules (no fabric softener, no bleach) then govern the whole load it joins.
There's no special pajama chemistry — cotton PJs behave like t-shirts, flannel PJs like light sweatshirts, and satin or silk sets like the delicates they are. Sort them by the same color and fabric logic as everything else.
The flame-resistance point is a real safety rule, not fussiness: softener and bleach degrade the flame-resistant treatment on children's sleepwear, so a load containing those PJs skips both.

The main risks
- Very few for adult cotton pajamas — this is a low-stakes pairing.
- Softener accidentally added to a load containing children's flame-resistant sleepwear.
- Satin or silk pajama sets snagging on zippers in a careless mixed load — those sets are delicates, not pajamas, for sorting purposes.
- New dark or printed PJs bleeding in their first wash like any new item.
When the answer changes
- Children's flame-resistant sleepwear in the load: proceed, but no softener and no bleach for that whole load.
- Silk or satin sets: delicate cycle in a mesh bag, or hand wash — see washing delicates.
- Fuzzy fleece pajamas: they shed like fleece — wash with towels or alone rather than with dark regular clothes.
New or strongly colored items
New flannel and printed pajamas can bleed and shed lint in early washes — first washes with darks or alone. Established cotton PJs are as colorfast as any old t-shirt.
Can they be dried together?
Yes.
Cotton pajamas tumble on low with the rest of the load. Elastic waistbands last longer at low heat, and fleece or satin sets air dry.
How to run them as separate loads
- No reason to, for ordinary cotton PJs — fold them into the regular rotation.
- Give fleece pajamas the fleece treatment and silk sets the delicates treatment; the category name matters less than the fabric.
Check the care labels
Adult pajama labels are ordinary. Children's sleepwear labels carry the flame-resistance care rules — read and follow them exactly; they exist for safety, not fabric preservation.
