Can you wash socks with underwear?

Yes — socks and underwear are about as compatible as two laundry categories get: small, sturdy, mostly cotton, happy in warm water on a normal cycle. They're the core of the classic "smalls" load.
Hygiene worries about this pairing are a common question with a reassuring answer: a proper wash with enough detergent handles both. Warm water is a sensible default for this load, since both categories tolerate it and both sit against skin.
The only members of either category that need special handling are the delicate ones — lace underwear and wool socks — which follow delicates and wool rules respectively, not smalls rules.

The main risks
- Very few. New dark socks can tint pale underwear in the first wash or two.
- Lace pairs snagging on sock-drawer company is a non-issue in the wash — but bag lace anyway if zippered items share the load.
- Losing small items: both categories are what mesh bags were invented for.
When the answer changes
- Wool or merino socks in the pile: those wash cold and gentle per their label — set them aside.
- Lace or silk underwear: delicate cycle in a mesh bag, air dry — it can share the drum, but bagged and with the load run gentle.
- Heavily soiled sports socks (mud, field dirt): rinse or wash them with the dirty-sport load instead.
New or strongly colored items
New red and navy socks are small but mighty dye sources — one new red pair can pink a load of white underwear. First washes with darks only.
Can they be dried together?
Yes.
Cotton socks and cotton underwear tumble together on low-to-medium heat without drama. Pull athletic socks and anything elastic-heavy early or dry them on low to protect the stretch.
How to run them as separate loads
- There's rarely a reason to — this pairing exists to be combined.
- If you bleach white socks occasionally, do it in a whites-only load, not the mixed smalls load.
Check the care labels
Both categories usually carry permissive labels. The exceptions ride on fabric: wool sock labels (cold, flat dry) and lace underwear labels (hand wash or delicate) mean what they say.
