Can you wash bath mats with towels?
Yes
Yes — bath mats and towels are natural washing partners: same room, same soil, same tolerance for warm water and a normal cycle. Towels even help, cushioning a heavy wet mat that would otherwise thump the drum off balance. The one hard rule comes afterward: a rubber-backed mat hangs to dry while the towels tumble.
Wash-wise there is very little to separate these two — cotton terry underfoot and cotton terry on the rail. Skip fabric softener for both, use warm water, and the load takes care of itself.
The backing is the whole story. Latex and rubber backing cracks and crumbles with dryer heat (and ages faster in hot water), so the mat's wash ceiling and its dryer ban come from the backing, not the fabric.

The main risks
- Forgetting the mat when you transfer the load to the dryer — one hot cycle visibly ages a rubber backing.
- Backing flakes in the wash from an already-degrading mat coating the towels in crumbs.
- Hot water accelerating backing wear if you run the towel load hot — keep shared loads warm.
When the answer changes
- Mat with no backing (plain woven or terry mat): everything relaxes — it's just a thick towel, dryer included if the label agrees.
- Memory-foam mats: not machine washable at all in most cases — spot-clean per label, and nothing about towels changes that.
- White towels you bleach hot: run those separately from a colored or rubber-backed mat.
New or strongly colored items
A new colored bath mat can bleed in its first wash — run it alone or with dark towels you don't mind risking. Established mats and towels of any color coexist fine in warm water.
Can they be dried together?
No, if the mat is rubber-backed — and most are.
Hang the mat over the tub or a drying rack and tumble the towels as usual. An unbacked cotton mat may join the dryer on low if its label allows.
How to run them as separate loads
- There's rarely a reason to separate the wash — just remember the split at the dryer.
- If the mat is shedding backing flakes, wash it alone (or retire it) so the crumbs don't lodge in the towels.
Check the care labels
Bath mat labels are the ones people never read and most need to: backing type, washability, and dryer permission vary widely. The mat's label overrides this page; the towels' labels are almost always permissive.
